Legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong is an enigma whose brilliant work in music spans five decades. He has belted out and popularized some of the most beloved jazz classics, such as “What a Wonderful World,” “La Vie En Rose,” “On the Sunny Side of Street,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” and tons more. His utmost artistry in singing and trumpet has broken barriers and laid the foundation of jazz music in North America. During a time when racism was a big issue in the country, Armstrong defied all odds and found incredible success as a musician but also as a public figure during the Civil Right era. 

When he did speak out against racism, it made the national news – a testament to his immense influence during the period. But ultimately, it is Armstrong’s love for music that has made him a beloved figure across the world. His unbelievable talent has pulled him from a poor neighborhood in New Orleans and to living a life of performing in phenomenal world tours. In this epic new musical, audiences will get to know the life behind Armstrong’s amazing career – from the viewpoints of his four wives. Audiences will get to witness the man’s musical genius, the birth of jazz in his home state of New Orleans, and rise to international stardom.

Premiering in Miami in 2021, A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical was mounted across multiple locations before finally making it to Broadway this 2024. The musical features a storyline written by Aurine Squire with music and lyrics by various artists. Esteemed Briitsh musical and opera director and Tony nominee Christopher Renshaw leads the creative team while Tony Award winning Broadway actor James Monroe Iglehart leads the ensemble cast. The stellar cast also includes Ta’rea Campbell as Lucille Wilson, Jennie Harnie Flemming as Lil Hardin, Khalifa White as Daisy Parker, and Brenynn Lark as Alpha Smith. 

Meanwhile, the creative team is made up of Broadway giants, such as Michael Mitchell and Annastasia Victory for music supervision and orchestration, Rickey Tripp and DeWitt Flemming on choreography, and Adam Koch and Steven Royal on scenic and projection. Tony nominated costume designer Toni-Leslie James brings the rich, vibrant fashion of the 1920’s to 1940s to life while Tony Award winning sound director Kai Harada and lighting designer Cory Pattak bring the element and ambiance of the old times to the big stage. 

This musical aims to bring the amazing story of American icon Louis Armstrong to life. The man is known for jumpstarting the jazz circuit in New Orleans and his remarkable musicianship in trumpet and singing mark will eventually lead to five decades of iconic stardom.
